If you have a loved one with a large amount of prescriptions and/or memory issues, rent or buy this product. I watched a very skeptical family member who was struggling with all the medicines they HAVE to take (including powerful pain medications) transform into someone who is happy and has so much less stress because they get the right dosages at the right times and no one can question how the medicines were taken. Using the product is incredibly easy. The big button turns green and a chime sounds when a dosage is scheduled. Press the the same big button twice and the medicines are dispensed. A button with a suitcase next to it dispenses "travel packs" (if allowed) and a button with a "+" allows for medicines taken as needed (Livi allows you to set limits on "as needed" medicines as well). Livi allows you to set up custom alerts and compliance reports (if needed). I have alerts for dispenses, missed dispenses, low quantities, and if the dispenser is unlocked. It is not an inexpensive item, but I can tell you it is less than the cost of just one ambulance ride caused by a prescription mix up. I started as a rental and PharmRight credited my rental towards the purchase. Setup is a bit of work at first, but once you get used to it it takes seconds to make changes, additions, or refills. The support has been amazing, both online and on the phone, and the mobile app is complete with clear instructions and videos on every process.
I won't lie. The setup for this is a beast. Do it on an evening when you have some free time and a good audiobook and your favorite drink. You will need to measure each pill to set up the machine to make sure they drop appropriately. It is amazing how much thought went into making this machine, though the setup is heavy, you will definitely appreciate the intentionality behind the machine. Once you get it all setup, it works like a charm. It does what it says it will do and there are a lot of customization options online to help you guide your loved one towards their medication. The best part of this machine - is the customer service. I have emailed or called them more times than I will tell you since I got this machine to ask questions to make sure this machine will suit my mom's needs. They have been amazing. Great care and consideration each time. If you need payment options go to their website. They have ways to pay that do not mean dropping $2,000 at one time. Also, there is no shipping fee on their website (though there could be sales tax). So far this has been great for my family. We've had it less than a week, but I think this really could work for us.
I purchased this a year ago directly from PharmRight before they were available on Amazon. I had searched for solutions for my 87 yo mother who has Parkinson's, congestive heart failure, AD and no innate talent for technology but was still able to live in her own apartment. Her pill schedule was 7 different meds dispensed in different combinations 6 times a day as some required food and some without, which would be confusing for anyone. Nothing I could find offered as many options as this. Most dispensers did not provide anywhere near the amount of control there is with this unit and it was far cheaper than hiring what services were available locally. The locked machine is well built, a combination of plastic and metal, and would require a crowbar to open without the key. The containers inside hold a full prescription of each medication and are dispensed according to the schedule set up online. Instructions may be displayed, if you wish, when the medication is dispensed. I was able to write the name of the medication, the reason why my mother was taking it and whether it required food, no food, or a lot of water taken with it. Via the website, I could review dispense logs, adjust the times if needed, see how much was left of each medication, adjust personal settings for when I wanted to receive text messages such as my mother was late taking her pill or if she had missed it, a warning that the medicine was getting low, or if someone had opened the locked machine. I had the option to give her physician or caregivers access to her dispense logs for review. The Customer Support Team is AMAZING! So helpful, courteous, and patient but most of all, interested in finding a solution for what is needed. No internet is required. It has its own cellphone account and calls home periodically for updates. If you change something on the website, you have the option to initiate an immediate update. For example, I work 50 miles away from where my mother lives and occasionally I would get a text at work telling me she is overdue for taking her meds. I would then call my mom on her cellphone and tell her she needs to get home and take a pill. Next I would log onto the website and if I extended the allowable time for dispensing by a couple minutes to accommodate her ETA to the apartment, by the time she got there, the dispenser knew the new rules for that medication and was available to be dispensed. Recently they have a added a feature to allow overrides as an optional choice. This machine is wonderful!! I cannot stress enough how important it was for both my mom and me. It enabled her to live another year entirely on her own and took away the hassle of filling a daily pill dispenser for me. I have no investment with this company and as of this week, sadly no longer require their services as my mom now requires a higher level of care and can no longer live at home. For anyone with multiple medications and a busy life, or wanting independence but not able to monitor their own medication this machine is THE ANSWER. I found nothing else like it on the market.
